How to Achieve Success by Following the Scrum Process

In life, we can use a 5-step process I learnt from Darren Hardy
👉 Plan
👉 Do
👉 Review
👉 Improve
👉 Repeat

…to succeed at anything. This approach, like Rob More’s Learn, Test, Review, Tweak, Repeat method, helps us handle unexpected challenges that come our way. By beating procrastination and getting things done step by step, we can do better, make fewer mistakes, and keep improving.

Success process vs. Scrum process

Let’s see how these processes for achieving success in whatever you do (whether it’s making products, staying fit, starting a business or raising children) relate to the Scrum framework.

Scrum

📝 Plan: As Dwight D. Eisenhower emphasised the importance of planning: “In preparing for battle I have always found that plans are useless, but planning is indispensable”. In Scrum we create a goal (Product Goal and Sprint Goal) and plan the steps to achieve it. We define Sprint Goals for each iteration that will help us achieve the Product Goal and select Product Backlog Items (PBIs) to fulfil these Sprint Goals.

🚀 Do: Take action and deliver your increment with the quality you need. Start small, add value incrementally, and do it with a consistency that allows you to achieve results at a sustainable pace.

🔍 Review: Regularly assess your progress to identify and correct bad patterns. In Scrum, daily scrums and sprint reviews provide opportunities to check that you’re on track to achieve your goals and to make course corrections.

🔝Improve: To achieve new levels of success, you need to adopt a growth mindset and embrace continuous improvement. In Scrum, you think about these improvements during Sprint Retrospectives, where you strive to make small, steady improvements over time.

🔄 Repeat: The process of planning, doing, reviewing, improving is always ongoing. Embrace the journey, detach from the results (there is always a result) and stay committed to the long term vision for sustainable success.

The Scrum process is so endless because you want to keep growing – never consider yourself “done” and don’t get discouraged by setbacks. Keep iterating towards growth and excellence!
